The owner of Mr Rental Auckland West, Jan McLaren, shaved her head on Daffodil Day and helped to raise $3447.50. On the day after the “official” Daffodil Day date, Saturday 29 August, Ms McLaren shaved her head to mark her 50th birthday, in addition to volunteering at one of the Cancer Council stands, and raise money to give hope and support to those with cancer.
The Mr Rental franchise as a whole raised over $5,000 at this year’s Daffodil Day, providing hope for a cancer free future. Established as a New Zealand-wide event in 1990, Daffodil Day has become the largest fundraising event of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Cancer Society now raises around $5 million each Daffodil Day, providing vital funds for research, education and support services. This is the 8th year in a row Mr Rental, as a network, has supported this cause.
According to General Manager, Alan Payne, the franchise as a whole raised over $75K in the last 18 months for the Cancer society NZ & Cancer Council Australia through annual conferences and training and training sessions.
It is a sentimental cause for Ms McLaren, having had both of her parents die from cancer – her father at just 42 years of age, and her mother more recently at 64 years of age. Ms McLaren clearly remembers the pain of the illness, being only 17 years old when her father passed away.
“My 50th birthday happens to fall on Daffodil Day and I saw this as the best opportunity to celebrate 50 years of good health, and to give back to those who helped our family during our time of need,” Ms McLaren said.
Admitting that this is the first time she has taken such a bold move, having never had her head shaved before, Ms McLaren is optimistic she may start a trend for those turning 50!
According to Mr Payne, the Mr Rental network is pleased to help fund the cancer control initiatives, patient support and education services of Cancer Society's member organisations. Mr Rental is in its nature and operation an organisation that is intent on providing the very best service and support to assist with the day to day needs of Australians.
Renting white goods and large household items is an attractive option for families looking to maximise their cashflow by not having to purchase big ticket items outright, while ensuring they’re not denying their family’s basic needs.”
